Al Bhazim

Al Bhazim Salukis

This is a small kennel in Vaasa, at the West Coast of Finland.
Salukis live a normal family life with us.

My name is Cisse and I have lived with Salukis since 1987.
Salukis for me is a lifestyle.

Me with Grace and Caspian.

From knowing nothing at all about Salukis (or dogs),
our first Saluki melted our hearts completely and let us in to this fantastic new way of living.

Salukis have been teaching us new stuff every day for more than 35 years!
I can not imagine a life without Salukis.

Amdi, Simon, Caspian, Grace and Lukas.

I am captured by their way of giving me joy,
but they also give a lot of grey hair.
This is not a breed for everyone.

A Saluki is not your servant - you are the staff.
Be prepared to have your Saluki as a full family member,
with a personal couch and maybe even your bed.

You may not start out that way,
but in most cases, you still are there in the end.

This is a wonderful breed that will capture your heart.
Be clear and firm but never let your Saluki down.
It will be remembered for a long time.

Effu and Simon.

You don't have to be the best athlete to exercise a Saluki.
But you need to be able to set them free in a safe environment.

Free from traffic and wild animals.
They will take care of the exercise by themselves.
They will run the fastest you can imagine!
Especially with friends just as fast.

But be prepared to let them run it ALL off
or you will be calling out for deaf ears.

Luckily a Saluki loves running in circles,
so ever now and then they will pass you by in full speed,
even if they will not be caught at the time.

So be patient!
Bend your knees and enjoy!
Never be in a hurry!

Grace in the field.

Outdoors they are real running machines,
indoors you hardly notice them,
other than four long legs sticking up from a couch.
They are handy folding dogs.

And a warning if you are new to the breed:
they tend to multiple fast in a family.
Very rare to find families with only one Saluki!

Normally Salukis do not smell,
you do not have to groom them much and they are not noisy.
But there will be exceptions.
A howling Saluki crowd is not uncommon.

Amdi at Lure Coursing.

A Saluki is a versatile dog.
You can do agility, obedience, tracking, running shows or whatever you like,
but the methods you use for teaching differ from the "average" dog.

You have to be patient and inventive.
Remember who is master and who is servant!
And running is often the best reward.

Most Salukis love Lure Coursing and it is quite a popular sport.
Also running on track is an option.

I always start with my puppies in puppy school
and go on with agility or something else.

This is for giving us the quality time together
but also for socialization and contact exercises.

It is very important to teach your Saluki about
different environments and situations
and play with different kinds of dogs,
meeting different kinds of people.

We enjoy the time together with our dogs,
going to events, meeting new friends, seeing new places.
Success is only a lovely bonus
but so easy to enjoy and get hooked up in when all goes well.

I am happy to see Al Bhazim Saluki owners finding the joy
in shows and Coursing
and most of all the ambition to be active.

All Salukis are individuals and all owners have their own agendas.
Time will tell what the new team will enjoy most.

All this is naturally mixed up
with normal family life.
This comes always as a priority.

Simon relaxing.

Our Salukis are versatile
forest, beach, garden, LC, show AND sofa dogs.
But most of all, our very best friends and family members!

Amdi with his son Caspian.
